Collection Charley Toorop Beemster, Bloeiende boom
This painting by Charley Toorop (1891–1955) is one of the highlights of the Museum MORE collection. Inspired by Vincent van Gogh, Toorop painted
fruit trees every year. In spring, she often captured the splendor of blossoms. In the midst of World War II, in 1943, she painted this powerful blooming tree, bursting with spring. Because Toorop refused to join the Kultuurkamer, she was no longer allowed to sell or exhibit her work. That is likely the reason she wrote the year 1940 on the back of this painting.
